MEDIC Announcements

Hello everyone!

Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting yesterday! Dr. Diekema gave us an amazing inside look into a real-life ethical dilemma that was made public on an international level. We learned about the Ashley X case from a highly unique and influential perspective. I hope very much that Dr. Diekema will come visit MEDIC again in the future. I have posted the meeting minutes and a few websites/things that Dr. Diekema had mentioned including a link to the paper he wrote with Dr. Norm Fost on the MEDIC GoPost page. If you would like to continue the discussion or weren’t able to make it to the meeting and would like to make-up the attendance, please post a thought or response on the GoPost page: https://catalyst.uw.edu/gopost/conversation/medicuw/507493

2. BH Grand Rounds on Thursday, April 21st from 4-5pm in Health Sciences Building, T-739 Make-up MEDIC attendance if you’ve missed a meeting by attending the BH Grand Rounds. “The End of Evidence: The Ethics and Epistemology of Clinical Decision Making” Our topic is presented by Mark Tonelli, MD MA, Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Adjunct Professor, Department of Bioethics and Humanities. Evidence-based medicine has generally asserted a privileged role for the results of clinical research in clinical decision making. Such a claim, however, is not defensible from either an ethical nor epistemic standpoint. The proper place of the results of clinical research in the practice of medicine will be discussed and an alternative to the evidence-based model of clinical decision making advanced.

If you would like to become one of our new 2011-2012 MEDIC officers, please fill out the anonymous application here: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/medicuw/131026 We have asked for your student numbers instead of your names or UW NetID in order to maintain a level of fairness and equality when reviewing completed applications and selecting officers. Please note that our officer application will only be available until Tuesday, May 24th at 11pm.
