| Iron Deficiency Anemia Iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy
can increase the risk of hypertension in the mother and poor pregnancy
outcome, and low birthweight and of iron deficiency in the infant during
the first year of life. Severe maternal iron deficiency compromises fetal
iron status. This may affect the infant’s development, including
socio-emotional behavior, recognition memory, later IQ, motor skills, and interactions with others.
(Kaiser,
2002; Georgieff
and Innis, 2005; Lozoff
et al, 2006; Georgieff, 2011) Some suggest that severe iron deficiency can impair mother-infant
bonding. |
