| Artificial sweeteners Saccharin crosses the placenta and appears in breastmilk, but there have been no studies documenting adverse effects on the fetus or infant Acesulfame-K crosses the placenta and appears in breastmilk, but there have been no studies documenting adverse effects on the fetus or infant Sucralose has not been found to be teratogenic in high doses in animals; there have been no studies of sucralose in breastmilk or during lactation Aspartame appears to be safe in pregnancy and lactation. (One of the metabolites of aspartame is phenylalanine, so use of aspartame is not appropriate for individuals with phenylketonuria.) Stevia appears to be safe in pregnancy and lactation based on animal studies, however there is no data on the use of Stevia during human pregnancies. |
