| Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder of pregnancy, occurring in about 2% of all pregnancies, usually in the last trimester. Gestational diabetes is more common among women who are overweight or obese. Gestational diabetes is associated with an increased risk of complications for both the mother and fetus (gestational hypertension, macrosomia, labor difficulties); mother and baby are also at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Treatment focuses on blood glucose control (sometimes requiring the use of insulin), and includes additional fetal monitoring. Medical Nutrition Therapy for gestational diabetes is covered in Module 4, Medical Nutrition Therapy for Specific Conditions.
