| Lactation during current pregnancy Breastfeeding while pregnant is a nutrition risk factor. It seems that the fetus’s nutrient needs are met, at the expense of the mother’s. It is reasonable to assume that the nutrient needs of a pregnant, lactating mother are increased above needs during pregnancy alone. Thus, ensuring an adequate nutrient intake may require more careful attention for the woman who is breastfeeding and pregnant. (Merchant, 1990)
