History of mental illness or depression The direct nutrition-related implication of mental illness or depression is the effect on nutrient intake. Providers should note that low income women are at higher risk for depression, especially during pregnancy, because of added stress, lack of support and resources. Clients tend to deal with this depression and stress by either not eating or over eating higher calorie foods. In addition, a referral for specialty care (if care is not already in place) may need to be facilitated. Drug-nutrient interactions should be considered if a woman is taking medication.
