| Oral health and dental issues Maternal oral health has implications for pregnancy on several levels. Oral problems can interfere with an adequate intake. In addition there is an association between maternal periodontal disease and low birthweight/small for gestational age. Finally, children whose mothers have oral health problems have an increased risk of dental caries themselves. (Boggess, 2006; AAP, 2003) If an individual’s water is not fluoridated or is inadequately fluorodiated, supplemental fluoride during pregnancy is needed. Good oral care is especially important during pregnancy, so questions about fluoride can provide a good opportunity to discuss oral hygiene and care.
