Scenario 1

Jeremy, a 7-year, 4-month old, is referred to you for evaluation of his dietary intake. His family is a little concerned because he is “thin.” They note that he has always been "about the same build."

Jeremy: weight- and height-for-age charts   Jeremy: BMI-for-age chart

His weight is between the 10th and 25th percentiles, height is between the 25th and 50th percentile. BMI-for-age is between the 10th and 25th percentiles.

You review the records that the family brings to clinic, and plot Jeremy’s growth.

Your assessment is that his weight and height remain “in channel” and that his BMI-for-age is acceptable. You explain that Jeremy’s growth pattern is within normal limits and that this shows that his energy intake is adequate.
