Visiting artist at the University of Washington from 2000-2002, Münir Beken is one of the
founding members of the State Turkish Music Ensemble. His technique, musicality, and mastery
of a variety of both old and modern styles have made him the leading ud player of his
generation. Beken's recordings are widely circulated and emulated by ud students.
Ziying Wu, former professor of traditional Chinese music at Shanghai Normal University
and director of the Shanghai Qin Society, is one of the few masters of the Chinese
seven-string zither (qin). The qin figures prominently in the literature, history, and
culture of traditional Chinese society, and its music represents one of the longest unbroken
musical traditions in the world. Wu performs on a qin crafted sometime during the 12th or
13th century, "The Perfectly Harmonized Jade and Pearl Qin," which is renowned for
its sweet, yet sonorous tone.
