Hershman Endowment for Marine Affairs Fellowship

The Marc J. Hershman Endowment for Marine Affairs Fellowship was established to honor the memory of Professor and former Director Marc J. Hershman, who passed away from cancer in 2008. Professor Hershman taught at the UW for more than 30 years and served as Director for 10 years. He founded the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center in Seattle and established and edited the Coastal Management Journal for decades. Among many other accomplishments, Professor Hershman served on President George W. Bush's U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy from 2001 - 2004. His passion was mentoring students, many of whom are now continuing his legacy by working and making a difference in state and national ocean and coastal policy.

This endowment provides financial awards to SMEA students whose work focuses on or employs principles and tools of coastal zone management, seaport management, marine transportation, or ocean and coastal policy studies.
