Jay Ginter Memorial Scholarship
"Fisheries Management is about managing people; the fish get along quite well by themselves." - Jay Ginter (courtesy JuneauEmpire.com)
The Jay Ginter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 to honor the memory of Jay Ginter, MMA 1978, one of the first graduates of what was then the Institute of Marine Studies and is now today the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Jay worked for over 30 years for NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in Alaska where he helped implement limited entry commerical fishing programs and individual quotas for certain fish species, both of which were designed to preserve fish stocks while protecting the lives and livelihoods of commercial fisher-people. To read more about Jay, please visit an obituary here.
This scholarship provides support to students whose work relates to fisheries and spans science and policy.
