The STARTALK Teacher Program, “Preparing Language Teachers for the 21st Century,” will prepare 10 native (or near native) speakers of Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, or Russian to teach in a standards and content-based program, focused on developing communicative proficiency and accuracy in students learning these languages. Teachers will be able to work toward obtaining a P-12 World Language Endorsement for teaching these languages in Washington K-12 public schools. The program is designed to teach them the STARTALK principles and standards-based language teaching and curriculum development, as well as the content knowledge needed to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test – Endorsement (WEST-E) for World Languages. The program also provides scholarship assistance to complete the required assessments (WEST-E and ACTFL OPIc and WPT). This Teacher Program has a special focus on integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into language instruction to prepare teachers to work effectively with today’s students. In 2017, the program will offer five UW credits of EDC&I 495 from the University of Washington College of Education.

FAQs

Q: By completing the UW STARTALK Teacher Program, will I qualify for a Washington State Teaching Certificate?

A: No. This program is not a complete teacher certification program. This program is intended for current teachers who already have WA State Certification and want to ADD a World Language Endorsement in one of the languages offered. It is also beneficial for teachers in college or community-based language programs or private schools that do not require Certification.

Q: Could I still be selected for the program even if I don’t already have a Washington State Teaching Certificate?

A: Yes. In years past, there have been plenty of open spots for interested teachers. Register early and we’ll follow up soon to answer your questions.

Q: What is the process to become a Certificated Teacher in Washington?

A: It depends on many considerations. We will provide extensive information about the process during the Teacher Program and at information sessions in advance of the program.

Q: I have attended other STARTALK Teacher Programs. Can I still register for this one?

A: Yes. We realize that many newer teachers would benefit from an opportunity to review the core principles of Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning and also get more experience writing learning plans and doing microteaching with students, especially heritage language learners.

Q: Are there other fees beyond the $45 registration fee?

A: There are no additional fees and all materials are provided. Participants are responsible for their own meals and housing if they come from out of the area.
