BILIARY TRACT
Case #1 -
A 40 year old lady, with R-sided abdominal pain

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
4.) What is the pathophysiology of stone formation? What kinds of stones may form?

Pathophysiology: solubility of cholesterol depends on concentrations of conjugated bile salts, phospholipids, and cholesterol in the bile. If cholesterol secretion is greatly increased or if bile salt and phospholipid secretion is decreased, solids settle out of solution and gallstones form.

Kinds of stones: cholesterol stones, bilirubin pigment stones, calcium bilirubinate stones, mixed stones.
