Pathophysiology: obstruction of neck of gallbladder or cystic duct by an impacted stone with subsequent mucosal ischemia, necrosis, and ulceration. There is then swelling, edema, and impairment of venous return. Acute inflammatory infiltrates are found in all layers of the gallbladder wall.
