5.) What are various etiologies of hepatic abscess?

Etiologies of hepatic pyogenic abscess:




  • Biliary: cholangitis due to calculi


  • Infection via portal venous route (pylephlebitis) from any segment of GI tract drained by portal vein with appendicitis and diverticulitis the most common sources

  • Generalized septicemia with involvement of liver by way of arterial circulation

  • Direct extension from intraperitoneal infection

  • Trauma

  • Secondary infection of amebic liver abscess
