Etiologies of hepatic pyogenic abscess:
- Biliary: cholangitis due to calculi
- Infection via portal venous route (pylephlebitis) from any segment of GI tract drained by portal vein with appendicitis and diverticulitis the most common sources
- Generalized septicemia with involvement of liver by way of arterial circulation
- Direct extension from intraperitoneal infection
- Trauma
- Secondary infection of amebic liver abscess
