- Type of surgical procedure: chest and upper abdomen at higher risk
- Age: higher risk if over 60 and increases with age
- Recent weight loss of >10%
- History of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Type of anesthesia: risk more with general anesthesia
- Emergency surgical intervention
- Recent smoking
- Functional status: higher risk if dependent
- Impaired sensorium
- Head of bed being flat
- stress ulcer prophylaxis
