2.) What are risk factors for postoperative pneumonia?

Risk factors for postoperative pneumonia:

  1. Type of surgical procedure: chest and upper abdomen at higher risk

  2. Age: higher risk if over 60 and increases with age

  3. Recent weight loss of >10%

  4. History of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  5. Type of anesthesia: risk more with general anesthesia

  6. Emergency surgical intervention

  7. Recent smoking

  8. Functional status: higher risk if dependent

  9. Impaired sensorium

  10. Head of bed being flat

  11. stress ulcer prophylaxis
