- Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Gastric polyps
- Menetrier's disease (hypertrophic gastropathy)
- Pernicious anemia
- Prior subtotal gastrectomy (more than 15 years)
- Ingestion of smoked or brined foods
