Case #5 - A 65 year old with hematemesis |
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: |
| 3.) What is the role of nasogastric tube placement and lavage?
|
In the setting of active upper gastrointestinal bleeding, nasogastric lavage is positive (bright red blood or coffee ground) 80% of the time. If lavage is positive, 50% of patients will be bleeding at the time of endoscopy. In addition, evacuation of clots by lavage will facilitate endoscopy.
