10.) What is Barrett's esophagus and what is its significance?

Barrett's esophagus is intestinal metaplasia of the distal esophagus with replacement of squamous epithelium by columnar epithelium. This is a premalignant lesion in which dysplasia may occur and progress to carcinoma.
