A 75 year old with lower abdominal pain and distension

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
4.) What diagnostic tests do you need?

Diagnostic tests:

  • Laboratory: CBC, electrolytes.

  • Plain and upright abdominal X-rays to see gas pattern, presence of volvulus, dilatation of cecum.

  • CT scan if diagnosis of large bowel obstruction is in doubt or if mass is present.

  • Contrast enema using gastrografin to define site of obstruction and possible etiology.
