COLORECTAL DISEASE
Case #3 -
A 75 year old with lower abdominal pain and distension

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
9.) What is the management of sigmoid volvulus? Of cecal volvulus?

The management of sigmoid volvulus is decompression with sigmoidoscopy followed by elective resection after preparation. If decompression is not possible or there are signs of strangulation, then emergent surgery is indicated.

Cecal volvulus is treated by emergent surgery. The preferred procedure is right hemicolectomy. An alternative procedure is cecopexy but this is not as safe.
