A 56 year old with abdominal pain

3.) What diagnostic tests are needed?

Diagnostic tests:

  • Laboratory: Liver function tests, amylase, lipase, CBC and platelets, glucose

  • Plain X-ray of abdomen: pancreatic calcifications seen in 30-50% of patients with chronic pancreatitis.

  • Ultrasound examination: detect gallstones or bile duct dilatation; look for a pancreatic mass

  • CT scan: pancreatic calcifications; pancreatic mass; pancreatic duct dilatation; splenic vein thrombosis; varices in gastrosplenic ligament.

  • ERCP - useful in diagnosis and staging of chronic pancreatitis
