BREAST DISEASE
Case #5 -
A 48 year old woman with a L breast lump

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
5.) What is the significance of the family history? What is the most common known gene mutation resulting in a high incidence of breast cancer? How is it inherited? What are the features of an inherited cancer syndrome?

Approximately 20% of all breast cancers occur in "family clusters", which are not related to inheritance of an autosomal dominant breast cancer gene. Almost 10% of all breast cancers are related to inheritance of an autosomal dominant predisposition gene. The most common mutations are BRCA 1 and BRCA 2. Markers suggesting mutation include anyone with breast cancer before age 35 or premenopausal breast cancer in 2 generations.
