Case #4 -
A 60 year old with hypercalcemia

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
4.) What are the various regulators of calcium metabolism in the body and how do they work?

Regulators of the body's calcium metabolism:

  • Parathyroid Hormone (PTH): stimulates reabsorption of calcium from bone
calcium reabsorption, promotes renal phosphate clearance, promotes 1,25 Vitamin D synthesis

  • Calcitonin: decreases reabsorption of calcium from bone

  • Vitamin D: promotes GI absorption of calcium

  • Calcitriol (formed in the kidney on stimulation by PTH): promotes calcium absorption from the GI tract
