A 35 year old with recent onset of hypertension

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
4.) What lab workup is needed? What findings are typical of pheochromocytoma? What findings are typical of aldosteronoma?

Laboratory evaluation:


  • Urinary catecholamines and metanephrines elevated in pheochromocytoma

  • Hypokalemia and hypernatremia suggest aldosteronoma; serum
    aldosterone is elevated with low serum renin and an increased aldosterone:renin ratio.

  • 24 hour urine for free cortisol and serum cortisol elevated in Cushing's syndrome
