COLORECTAL DISEASE
Case #8 -
A 55 year old male with 3 months rectal bleeding

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
14.) What tumor marker is useful in following patients after resection?

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is the tumor marker used postoperatively to detect recurrence or metastasis. Preoperative levels must be elevated for this test to be reliable. In the first 2 years post-treatment, this should be checked every 3 months. An increase from baseline merits further evaluation.
