VASCULAR SURGERY
Case #10 -
64 year old female with abdominal pain for 3 hours.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
7.) What are the symptoms of chronic mesenteric ischemia?

Chronic mesenteric ischemia is symptomatic usually only if severe and at least 2 of the 3 (celiac axis and superior mesenteric) major vessels involved. The pain is typically postprandial 15-30 minutes and results from the increased oxygen demand and resulting byproducts of anaerobic metabolic processes. Weight loss may occur if patient avoids eating to avoid pain. The patient often has other manifestations of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
