PEDIATRIC SURGERY
Case #4 -
A male infant is brought to the emergency room

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
2.) How can these two be differentiated clinically?

Omphalocele is a midline abdominal wall defect. It is found more commonly in males. Bowel and liver are in a sac composed of peritoneum and amnion. The umbilical cord arises from it. The incidence of gastroschisis is equal in males and females. This is a smaller right paramedian defect with no sac. It is twice as common as the omphalocele. Liver rarely herniates through these defects
