PEDIATRIC SURGERY
Case #7 -
A male infant was delivered normally at term

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
6.) What are the surgical options for management of imperforate anus?

Low anomalies may be repaired in the neonate by perineal anoplasty using a
muscle stimulator to locate the sphincter complex.

High anomalies may be approached in two ways:

  • If the rectal gas is below the coccyx and there are no other anomalies,
a repair may be done primarily either laparoscopically or by a posterior saggital approach.

  • If the rectal gas is above the coccyx or there are associated defects, a
colostomy is done first with definitive repair at a later date.
