BREAST DISEASE
Case #6 -
50 year old female with thickening in the right breast

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
5.) What is the significance of lobular carcinoma in situ when seen in a breast biopsy?

Lobular carcinoma in situ, when found in a biopsy, is an indicator of increased risk for both invasive duct cell carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. Lobular carcinoma in situ may also be a precursor for invasive lobular carcinoma. The risk of having invasive lobular carcinoma is greater in the presence of lobular carcinoma in situ than in the absence of LCIS.
