Clinical conditions resulting in a primary lung abscess:
- Necrotizing pneumonia - community-acquired or nosocomial\
- Aspiration due to suppressed cough or impaired consciousness such as stroke or alcoholism
- Esophageal disease - GERD, achalasia, Zenker's diverticulum
- Immunocompromised state due to HIV, malignancy, chemotherapy, post-transplant
