{"id":180,"date":"2021-09-01T12:53:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T19:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/tgnbhealthprogram\/?page_id=180"},"modified":"2024-11-14T12:01:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T20:01:12","slug":"gender-affirming-care-referrals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/tgnbhealthprogram\/uwm-providers-intranet\/gender-affirming-care-referrals\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender-Affirming Care Referrals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurance.wa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/gender-identity-discrimination-letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington state law<\/a>\u00a0prevents insurance discrimination based on gender identity and in 2021 Washington State passed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5313&amp;Year=2021&amp;Initiative=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 5313<\/a>, prohibiting health insurers from denying or limiting coverage for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crosscut.com\/equity\/2021\/05\/insurers-wa-must-cover-transgender-health-care-under-new-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gender-affirming treatment<\/a>\u00a0when that care is prescribed to an individual on the basis of a protected gender expression or identity, is medically necessary, and is prescribed in accordance with accepted standards of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, there are often a number of documentation and health-related steps necessary in order to meet the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wpath.org\/soc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH)<\/a>\u00a0<em>standards of care<\/em>\u00a0and requirements for coverage through insurance. All gender-affirming surgeries must meet the above standards of care and have this documented by both a primary care provider and mental health provider(s), regardless of insurance coverage and payment. All gender-affirming health providers are required to follow WPATH standards of care that include provider letters, without exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please read<\/strong> the <strong><em>Before making a referral for gender-affirming surgical care \u2013 What you need to know<\/em><\/strong> section below to ensure these steps are completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gender-affirming surgical care coverage process is unique and the provider documents required are specific to these services and this population.
