About Ekin

Ekin Yaşin, born in Gainesville, Florida in 1981 and raised in Istanbul from six months old, returned to the U.S. at 17 to study at Georgetown University. With extensive education in Near Eastern Studies and Anthropology from NYU and a PhD from NYU in Media, Culture, and Communication, she's now an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her journey to the US was eye opening, as before it her only impressions of the US were through media and a limited work trip. Identifying solely as Turkish, Ekin is deeply involved in the Turkish-American community, has led cultural initiatives, and enjoys sharing her heritage through cooking and hosting, planning to retire in Turkey.
