Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviors in Adolescents with ASD


Autism and Anxiety

Up to 84% of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been found to experience anxiety symptoms (White et al., 2009). It is important to understand how anxiety may impact symptoms of ASD and how to respond when someone with ASD is experiencing anxiety. In this training participants will learn:

  • The difference between everyday worry and diagnosable levels of anxiety
  • Symptoms of various Anxiety Disorders
  • How to recognize anxiety in someone with ASD
  • Behavioral strategies and treatments shown to reduce anxiety

Clock hours for certificated school staff available for an additional fee.

Who should attend: Parents, providers, and educators of individuals with ASD of all ages.

Content level: Beginner to Intermediate

When Once is Not Enough:
Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviors in Adolescents with ASD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can interfere with day-to-day life, causing functional impairment and frustration. This workshop will cover the basics of OCD and its relationship to anxiety and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Effective treatment approaches, such as exposure therapy and mindfulness strategies will be reviewed.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

  • The cycle of OCD and how obsessions and compulsions grow stronger over time
  • The basics of exposure and response prevention therapy and how it works to alleviate symptoms of OCD
  • Basic exposure strategies to use with adolescents with ASD who exhibit OCD behaviors
  • Basic response prevention strategies, including relaxation

Clock hours for certificated school staff available for an additional fee.

Who should attend: Parents, providers, and educators of individuals with ASD ages 12 years and up.

Content level: Beginner

Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations received at least two business weeks prior to course start date are eligible to receive a full refund less a $20 administrative fee. Cancellations must be received in writing by e-mail, fax, or U.S. mail prior to the stated deadline. Cancellations received after the stated deadline will forfeit the full registration fee. Refunds will not be available for registrants who choose not to attend a class. UW Autism Center reserves the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or other circumstances that would make the course non-viable. If UW Autism Center cancels a course, registrants will be notified within 24 hours of the first class date and offered a full refund or the option to transfer registration to another course.
