Weekend Walks
Our March tour theme is Our Favorite Plants. Out of the over 10,000 plants in the Arboretum's collection, some really stand out to the volunteer docents who lead the weekend walks. We become fond of them and develop favorites over time. Therefore March tours will feature each docent's favored plants. Come along and find these hidden, and not so hidden, treasures with us. On Exhibit in the Library: A Wetlands Affair, Drawings by Juliet Shen
Artist Juliet Shen has adopted the Union Bay Natural Area as her outdoor studio, drawing there from her small folding stool through all four seasons. Her drawings of the area will be on display at the Miller Library through March 31, 2014. A portion of the proceeds from artwork sales benefit the Library.

Come to the Annual Garden Lovers' Book Sale!
 The annual Elisabeth C. Miller Library Garden Lovers’ Book Sale is coming up on April 4 & 5! If you haven’t been yet, you owe it to yourself to come out and browse the huge selection of used plant-themed books. Things get rolling on Friday, April 4, with the Wine and Cheese Preview Party from 5pm to 8pm. Tickets are $20, there’s a silent auction of especially interesting books, and you’ll find plenty of appetizers. The following day, Saturday, April 5, the book sale runs from 9am to 3pm. It’s free and open to the public. All sales go to benefit the Miller Library.
If you need to make some space on your bookshelf, the library is still welcoming donations. The library is accepting new or gently used books about plants or plant-related themes such as botany, landscape design or restoration, horticulture, etc. You can drop them off at the library, located in the Center for Urban Horticulture, during their hours of operation (Mondays, 9am to 8pm; Tuesday through Friday, 9am to 5pm; and Saturdays, 9am to 3pm). Book donations will be accepted right up to the day of the sale. To purchase party tickets or for more information about making a book donation, contact Martha Ferguson or call the Miller Library at 206.543.0415. We look forward to seeing you there!

A Glimpse Into the Past
This view looks from Lake Washington Boulevard toward the southern end of Azalea Way. The photo was taken by H. G. Ihrig in May 1944. It shows the opening of Arboretum Creek along Azalea Way as it flows north from the culvert under Lake Washington Boulevard. Note the large weeping willow trees as well as the large open grass path we all know as Azalea Way. READ MORE.

March 2014 Plant Profile: Stewartia sinensis
 (by Soest Gardener Riz Reyes. Photo by Mitch Evans) It seems somewhat odd that we’re profiling a plant we currently don’t have yet at UW Botanic Gardens, but we’ll have it shortly. Everyone will be able to see it in a very prominent spot at the Center for Urban Horticulture. After ten years, the second of two Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood) in the Soest Garden will be removed to make room for a new tree that will cast partial shade in Bed 2. Curation has selected the exquisite and rare Stewartia sinensis. READ MORE.
