Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. In 2023, the Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 55 scholarships of up to $7,000 each.

The Udall Scholarship provides

  • Access to the Udall Alumni Network: an association of change-makers, working in Indian country and environmental fields, sharing innovative ideas, professional advice, and job and internship opportunities.
  • Five days in Tucson, Arizona, at Scholar Orientation: extending your professional network, meeting other scholars and alumni, and learning new skills.
  • Up to $7,000 for eligible academic expenses.

Eligibility

The Udall Scholarship has three different categories of scholarship, depending on your own interests and goals. You may apply in the following categories:

  • Tribal Policy (for Native Americans and Alaska Natives working on an array of policy issues in Indian country
  • Native Health Care (for Native Americans and Alaska Natives working on an array of policy issues in Indian country)
  • Environment (for all undergraduates interested in conservation and environmental issues)

NOTE: UWB will nominate students based on a UWB review process. Students cannot apply directly to the Udall Foundation on their own.


Important Dates 2023

  • September 21: The 2023 online application is available.
  • March 1: Faculty reps must register students for the online application by this date.
  • March 2: Applications must be submitted through the online system by 11:59 p.m. MST
  • April 18: Faculty reps can check their students’ application status and notify their students of the results.
  • April 20: The Udall Foundation will send email notifications to all applicants.
  • April 24: Deadline for Udall Foundation receipt of Scholar Award Reply form and Scholar Travel Reply form
  • May 5: Udall Scholars announced on http://www.udall.gov
  • August 2-6: Udall Scholar Orientation, Tucson, Arizona
