Description

Emerging Sophomore through Senior students are invited to apply to the University of Washington Bothell paid and credited Environmental Careers Preparedness Spring and Summer Research and Teaching Program.  EnCAP is focused on preparing the next generation of students for the growing green economy by providing pathways towards environmental and sustainability degree programs through a 3-credit spring mentorship course and a field-based summer teaching and research experience. Selected applicants will work closely with UWB faculty across disciplines to co-lead a 4-week interdisciplinary, field-based program for local high school students to support their learning about the range, impacts, and diversity of green career pathways in Washington State. In addition to co-leading the EnCAP summer high school program, participants will conduct their own research project in partnership with faculty. Participants should have an interest and background working with youth and conducting independent field-based research in any discipline of interest.  We are hiring 4 students for this first cohort of EnCAP Summer Program.

This position requires that you enroll in a spring research seminar course in addition to the paid summer position. The spring cousre is an idependent study co-taght by UWB faculty. The time and details of the course will be decided based on student schedules. More details below:

  • Spring Quarter: enroll in a 3-credit mentorship course (time will be determined by schedule). This portion of the program is unpaid.
  • Summer Quarter:  Earn $21/ hr while co-leading high school students through an interdisciplinary field-based learning experience (July 1-31) at St. Edward State Park and engage in paid research in partnership with UWB faculty. There are a total of 210 hours of possilbe work total for this position.
    • The program teaching and leadership component of this position will require you to be at St. Edward State Park about 30 hours / week July 1-31st. You will need reliable transportation and will need to be at the park each day, although some days may be remote or in other locations. Research components of this work will be ongoing through August and will have fewer hours and a more flexible schedule than the July program.

All new student employees must also complete UW’s online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.

Qualifications

  • Be an emerging Sophore – Senior student at UW Bothell
  • Have prior experience and an interest working with youth (you will be working with high school students as a part of this job)
  • Be interested in Interdisciplinary learning outdoors
  • Be a supportive and enthusiastic team member
  • All new student employees must also complete UW’s online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.
  • It is preferred, but not required, that you have take prior coursework with particpating faculty members:
