Position Description
$26.50 – $33.69 Hourly
Completes field work for Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) sampling and ambient monitoring program and assists with records management and data entry. Work could include field note-taking, updating GIS data base, field inspection of storm water facilities, and collection of water quality samples. Other functions may include; environmental outreach efforts, data entry, and field surveys. Position will receive general direction from the surface water management program staff.
Examples of Essential Duties
- Maintain storm and surface water records.
- Conduct GPS surveys of streams and stormwater infrastructure.
- Conduct water quality sampling and field assessment of streams.
- Enter water quality data and assist in database quality control.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in science or engineering or a closely related field or currently enrolled in college with two (2) years of college or equivalent education.
Some experience in environmental science, aquatic ecology, chemistry, hydrology, geology, civil engineering or a related field is preferred or any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- Water conveyance/detention systems and related stormwater issues;
- General concepts of applied aquatic chemistry, hydrology, geology, civil engineering and how water is conveyed;
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment;
- MS Office 2007, specifically Excel and Access;
- Rudimentary information in Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
- Principles of basic report preparation, filing and indexing procedures;
- Standard English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Ability to:
- Lift manhole lids and operate inspection equipment;
- Operate a variety of modern office equipment;
- Utilize various computer software applications and GPS handheld devices;
- Operate scientific instruments commonly used for water quality sampling;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Produce clear and concise reports;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Additional Information
- Successful candidate must pass a criminal history background check;
- Temporary, part-time position funded up to four (4) full months;
- FLSA nonexempt;
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Drivers License;
- Must submit a driving record from the Department of Licensing.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor setting. Work in the field will be performed in all weather conditions. Lifting up to 50 lbs is required. Fieldwork involves frequent walking on uneven surfaces, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pulling, reaching, operating a motor vehicle to get to inspection sites and exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases and poor ventilation. Indoor office setting involves sitting at a computer.
