To what extent has\u00a0the\u00a0photographic\u00a0imaginary\u00a0influenced portraiture, reenactments, or\u00a0the\u00a0tableau in\u00a0the\u00a0cinema? In what instances have\u00a0the\u00a0overlaps between\u00a0film\u00a0and\u00a0photography\u00a0informed\u00a0visual ethnography? Is\u00a0the\u00a0opposition between stillness and movement obsolete inthe\u00a0digital era? What other ontologies of\u00a0the\u00a0moving and still image can be found\u00a0in non-Western contexts? Readings will be drawn from three areas: historical\u00a0studies of\u00a0the\u00a0two media,\u00a0film\u00a0and\u00a0photography\u00a0theory, and\u00a0the\u00a0ethics and\u00a0the\u00a0politics of representation.<br \/>\nAmong others, we will read Marta Braun, Serge Gruzinsky, Seigfried Kracauer,\u00a0Catherine Russell, and WJT Mitchell.
