It is a tool used to trigger information that a student has studied but may have difficulty recalling due to cognitive processing deficits associated with memory and recall. The memory aid allows the student to demonstrate knowledge of course material by helping prompt the student\u2019s memory, not by providing the answer. Memory aids should only provide memory clues for the student to recall the concepts they have studied, and would not be useful if the student hasn&#8217;t learned the material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students may be limited in their ability to use a memory aid if the memorization of certain elements are deemed necessary to meet the core-learning outcomes of the course subject. In these instances, DRS and Instructor consultation will be required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What does a Memory Aid look like?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Styles of memory aids may vary. Memory aids are typically small, and not meant to be exhaustive such as an open book exam. Exact size of the memory aid should be at the discretion of the instructor, but DRS recommends anything between the size of a 3\u201dx 5\u201din index card or a 8.5\u201dx11\u201d sheet of paper. The content should serve as memory triggers for the student rather than explicit course content: the ideal memory aid would most likely make little sense to anyone but that specific student.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>At the discretion of the instructor, the memory aids may or may not include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acronyms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short phrases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pictures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schematic diagrams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formulas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definitions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sample questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key terms\/work charts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Memory Aids generally should NOT:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directly answer exam or quiz questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have steps listed for how to work problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include specific examples how formulas are used<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include copied pages from textbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include student\u2019s extensive class notes, lectures notes, or slides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include access to homework in the testing environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include the use of open textbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serve as a substitute for studying<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"uw-btn btn-sm btn-gold\" href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwdrs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Memory-Aid-examples-Last-updated-Aug-2022.pdf\">Examples of Memory Aids linked here<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Memory Aid Procedures for Exams<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><i>For each exam that the student uses a memory aid, the following must occur:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student provides the memory aid to the instructor for editing and final approval, at least<\/span><b> 3 business days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prior to the test\/exam.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note- if the 3 business days timeline does not align with the students\u2019 needs, instructors and students should work together to find a new timeline for a memory aid approval. (i.e: course content is taught in class that will be included in the exam within the 3 business days window.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructor then:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approves the memory aid as is,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removes information that the Instructor has deemed inappropriate, or\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disallows the memory aid altogether because the memory triggers are deemed to be essential to the learning objectives\/outcomes for the course<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"box-outer\">\n<div class=\"box one box-none box-tan\">\n<div class=\"tile\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For exams taken in the DRS Testing Center, Instructors must send the approved memory aid through email to drstest@uw.edu <em><strong>at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled exam<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>DRS Testing Center staff will attach the memory aid to the exam for the student, and it will be scanned\/emailed back to the professor after the exam is complete.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>DRS Testing Center staff will NOT allow students to bring in a memory aid that is not sent from the instructor\u2019s email, to reduce risk of students bringing unapproved materials to their exam.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em><strong>If this timeline is not followed, the student may not be allowed to use their memory aid in their exam. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Memory Aid?
