As of October 1, 2018, the University of Washington has a contract with Lime to operate bike share on campus. Below are guidelines and options for reporting and\/or removing any bikes\u00a0 that are improperly parked on campus.<\/p>\n

When is a bike improperly parked?<\/h2>\n

According to WAC 478-116-199<\/a> regarding bicycle parking, at no time shall a bicycle be parked:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. In a building, except where bicycle storage rooms are provided;<\/li>\n
  2. Near a building exit;<\/li>\n
  3. On a path or sidewalk unless attached to a university bike rack;<\/li>\n
  4. In planted areas; or<\/li>\n
  5. Chained or otherwise secured to trees, lamp standards, railings, garbage receptacles, fencing, or sign posts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Essentially, \u200ba bike share is improperly parked when it is not at or near a bike rack\u200b.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    When is a bike causing an \u200begregious operational impact\u200b?<\/h2>\n

    An \u201cegregious operational impact\u201d is defined as the effect caused by bikes both in violation of\u00a0 WAC 478-116-199<\/a> AND that are causing immediate mobility and access issues. Examples\u00a0 include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Bikes parked on sidewalks, trails, and\/or access ramps;<\/li>\n
    2. Bikes parked in front of parking lot or parking garage entrances and exits; and<\/li>\n
    3. Bikes parked on pedestrian overpasses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      How can I report\/impound a bike causing an egregious\u00a0 operational impact?<\/h2>\n

      Bikes that are causing an immediate egregious operational impact can be addressed by\u00a0 following the steps below:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Report the bike by emailing \u200bbshare@uw.edu<\/a>\u200b \u200band following the instructions above. Flag\u00a0 it as causing an immediate egregious operational impact, and make sure to get the serial\u00a0 number.<\/li>\n
      2. In order to relocate the bike so it is not impeding movement or ingress\/egress\u200b, do one\u00a0 of the following:\n
          \n
        1. Call UWPD to move or impound the bike.\u200b<\/strong> Impounded bike share bikes are stored in a corral in the northeast tip of the E1 lot. Instruct UWPD to take bikes there,\u00a0 and alert the Active Transportation Specialist by e-mailing \u200bbshare@uw.edu<\/a>\u200b.<\/li>\n
        2. If you are willing and able to do so safely, you may move the bike out of the way\u00a0 yourself<\/strong> \u200bso that the bike will be properly parked. For example, if there is a bike\u00a0 blocking the sidewalk on NE Campus Parkway, you may move it into the SDOT\u00a0 right of way between the sidewalk and the curb. As the back wheel is locked, hold\u00a0 the back of the seat (pedal bikes) or the battery (e-bikes), lift up, and push the\u00a0 bike forward using the handlebars. The bikes are heavy, so please use proper\u00a0 lifting techniques, and only move them if you feel able.<\/li>\n
        3. Impound the bike yourself by taking it to the corral in E1.\u200b<\/strong> Alert the Active\u00a0 Transportation Specialist.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
