Terrill Thompson and Anna Marie Golden of UW-IT Accessible Technology Services shared the results of their accessibility review of 50 Drupal sites at the UW (out of 165 known sites). They evaluated the sites on ten measures of accessibility:

  • ARIA landmarks
  • Headings
  • Zoom
  • Skip links
  • Dropdown menus
  • Carousels
  • Visible Focus
  • Contrast
  • Alt text
  • Label on search

See the Presentation Slides for details.

They showed examples of each measure and talked about common weaknesses and strategies for improvement. Their review revealed several patterns in accessibility that we can discuss (and hopefully fix) as a community. We will continue the conversation about having some hackathons or sprints dedicated to accessibility issues.

The UW Drupal Users Group and WordPress Users Group collaborated to bring a first-of-its-kind event, the UW Drupal/WordPress Accessibility Sprint 2019. The event ran from 9am - noon, with lunch provided, and an optional extended work period until 3:00pm. It was held in HUB 214. Our goal was to find and fix as many accessibility issues as possible on our Drupal and Wordpress websites.  Over 30 people attended the event.
