{"id":967,"date":"2018-12-10T13:59:32","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwgrad\/?p=967"},"modified":"2018-12-10T13:59:32","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:59:32","slug":"planning-for-autumn-2018-graduation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwgrad\/2018\/12\/planning-for-autumn-2018-graduation\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning for Autumn 2018 Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because many faculty and advisors take time off and travel during the holiday season, we ask departments to plan ahead to ensure a successful and timely graduation for students graduating in December. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/students\/reg\/1819cal.html#Q6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grades<\/a>\u00a0are due from faculty on Tuesday, December 18, and the department should submit degree recommendations no later than <a href=\"http:\/\/grad.uw.edu\/for-students-and-post-docs\/degree-requirements\/dates-and-deadlines\/\">December 19th<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students must have completed all degree requirements on or before December 14, 2018. Before you recommend graduation in MyGrad (by <strong>Wednesday, December 19th at 5 p.m.<\/strong>), please ensure the following steps have been completed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verify the master\u2019s request indicates the correct degree code; contact GEMS if the degree code is incorrect<\/li>\n<li>Verify that all department contingencies have been cleared<\/li>\n<li>Verify that all required courses have grades appearing on the degree audit in MGP<\/li>\n<li>Verify that any necessary <a href=\"http:\/\/grad.uw.edu\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/gradadvisorguide.pdf\">petitions<\/a> have been submitted and approved by GEMS (e.g., \u201ccount GNM credits\u201d or \u201cextend time limit\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Verify that all requirements appear <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">OK<\/span><\/strong> (satisfied) by running the Degree Audit from the Student Detail Page in MGP. There are a few exceptions (see below \u201cRequirement Status on Degree Audit\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Verify that grades have posted to the transcript for the final quarter of enrollment (grades are due by 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 18th).<\/li>\n<li>Print the warrant before approving a Master\u2019s Degree Request (see MGP help files)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any questions or are unable to recommend a student for graduation by <strong>Friday, December 21st at 5 p.m.<\/strong> (e.g., due to unposted grades), please contact GEMS at 206.897.1487 or <a href=\"mailto:gemshelp@uw.edu\">gemshelp@uw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Requirement Status on Degree Audit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Degree Audit is color-coded to help you quickly identify the status of requirements:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>IP<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 The requirement is satisfied when the current or in-progress courses are completed.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NO<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 The requirement has\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0been satisfied.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>OK<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 The requirement has been satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>You can run the Degree Audit from the Student Detail Page in MGP to verify that\u00a0<strong>all <\/strong>requirements appear\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>OK<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0with a few exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>The following requirements will always appear as\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NO<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0because they are satisfied by GEMS during graduation processing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thesis accepted by the Graduate School<\/li>\n<li>Thesis written in English<\/li>\n<li>Dissertation accepted by the Graduate School<\/li>\n<li>Dissertation written in English<\/li>\n<li>Registered as a graduate student the quarter the Final Exam is taken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following requirement will appear as\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NO<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0if the student is paying the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grad.uw.edu\/policies-procedures\/general-graduate-student-policies\/graduate-registration-waiver-fee\/\">Graduate Registration Waiver Fee<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain registration as a graduate student through the end of the quarter in which the degree is conferred<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>All<\/strong>\u00a0other requirements should appear\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>OK<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<em>before<\/em> you recommend graduation in MyGrad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Degree Audit Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Examine the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\"><strong>IP<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0requirements closely. Sometimes grades are missing for required courses taken in previous quarters\/years.<\/li>\n<li>Do not recommend graduation if an <strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00;\">IP<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0course is a required course.
