Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women who reside in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/basic_info\/symptoms.htm\">symptoms of breast cancer vary<\/a>.\u00a0 They may include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Any change in the size or shape of the breast<\/li>\n<li>Pain in any area of the breast<\/li>\n<li>Nipple discharge other than breast milk \u2013 including blood<\/li>\n<li>A new lump in the breast or underarm<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/basic_info\/risk_factors.htm\">main factors<\/a> influencing one\u2019s risk of developing breast cancer include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Being a woman<\/li>\n<li>Being older \u2013 most breast cancers are found in women 50 years old or older<\/li>\n<li>Having changes in you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/genomics\/disease\/breast_ovarian_cancer\/genes_hboc.htm\">BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Regarding breast cancer, consider this\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Annually in the United States, over 245,000 women will get breast cancer and 40,000 women will die from the disease<\/li>\n<li>Men also get breast cancer \u2013 though it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men.<\/li>\n<li>Most breast cancers are found in women 50 years of age and older<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/young_women\/bringyourbrave\/breast_cancer_young_women\/\">Younger women<\/a> can develop breast cancer as well \u2013 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States occur in women younger than 45 years old.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>What can be done to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Several factors across one\u2019s lifespan can influence the risk of developing breast cancer. Some of which cannot be altered \u2013 such as getting older or having a family history of the disease.\u00a0 However, the CDC offers are some measures we can take in lowering our risk:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyweight\/\">healthy weight<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Regularly exercise<\/li>\n<li>Avoid alcohol consumption or limit alcoholic drinks to one a day<\/li>\n<li>With your doctor\u2019s guidance find the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/hormones\/mht-fact-sheet\">hormone replacement therapy<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/hormones\/oral-contraceptives-fact-sheet\">oral contraceptives<\/a> (if either are taken or you are instructed to take)<\/li>\n<li>If possible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/\">breastfeed<\/a> your children<\/li>\n<li>Consult your doctor for guidance around how best to lower your risk \u2013 especially if you have a family history of breast cancer or inherited changes in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/young_women\/bringyourbrave\/hereditary_breast_cancer\/brca_gene_mutations.htm\">BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>In which ways can UW Medicine support patients wanting to learn more about their risk for developing breast cancer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1984\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1984\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-1024x708.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-375x259.jpg 375w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-750x519.jpg 750w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwmedptn\/wp-content\/uploads\/04_Mammography-ESC-1140x788.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: UW Medicine Photo Library<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwmedicine.org\/specialties\/center-for-women-and-children\/breast-care\">UW Medicine\u2019s Center for Women and Children<\/a> offers specialized screening, treatments and services for every woman and child.
