Research Internships at Aga Khan University in Kenya

The Challenge
The Aga Khan University, Nairobi is one of the premier Medical Colleges in East Africa. There are nine residency programs providing state of the art training to future leaders and medical providers. Aga Khan is also a leading institution for research in East Africa, engaging with TREE and other organizations globally to propose, design, and conduct research focused on improving health for Kenya's diverse populations. In order to promote interest in research among students and build capacity for research in Kenya, AKU offers a paid research internship opportunity.

Our Approach
In partnership with TREE, the Aga Khan University is offering a six to twelve-month field internship experience in Kenya. The internship is seeking graduate student applicants from the University of Washington (UW) to come to Kenya and learn from UW and AKU faculty mentors. MPH and PhD students wishing to pursue thesis fieldwork in Kenya may be particularly interested.

Potential projects include expanding and studying cervical cancer screening programs for rural coffee farmers and HIV-infected women, examining the effects of indoor air pollution on lung disease, supporting HIV care and treatment at one of the largest antiretroviral treatment centers in the country, facilitating and analyzing the impact of e-learning to train healthcare workers, and understanding disease presentation and treatment of non-communicable disease at a Kenyan tertiary care hospital.

Project Goals
The goal of the internship is to provide students with the opportunity to gain research and/or public health implementation skills that could be used for the development of a thesis or capstone project.
