George DeGraffenreid
George DeGraffenreid is Associate Professor of Music at California
State University, Fresno teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
in instrumental methods and music education.
DeGraffenreid is President-elect of the California Music Educators
Association and is completing his second term as Chair of the
California Council for Music Teacher Education (CALCOMTE) the
professional organization of collegiate music education faculty in
California. Since 1994 he has served as a member of the Music Subject
Matter Review Panel for the California Commission on Teacher
Credentialing (CTC). From 1989 to 1992 George was a member of the CTC
Select Music Panel formulating new music teacher preparation
guidelines for the State of California. He also contributed to the
Glencoe secondary general music text, Music! Its Role and Importance
in Our Lives and to the Silver Burdett Ginn elementary music series,
Music Connection. DeGraffenreid also designed test standards and
wrote test items for PRAXIS, the national teacher assessment exam in
music published by Educational Testing Service.
Prior to joining the faculty at California State University, Fresno,
DeGraffenreid taught for six years in a Denver suburb before moving to
Los Angeles where he spent eight years as Director of Instrumental
Music at the Van Nuys High School Performing Arts Magnet. During his
time in Los Angeles his highly regarded ensembles made concert tours
to Florida, Washington DC, and Europe. He was also a director of the
300-member Los Angeles City Schools All-City Marching Band which
appears annually in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade.
Dr. DeGraffenreid completed undergraduate studies in instrumental
music education at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His
Master's degree in music is from California State University, Los
Angeles and his doctoral studies were completed at the University of
Washington in 1995.
