Margaret Weitzel

Margaret Young-Weitzel is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at St. Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois. She is also currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Washington where she was a conducting student of Timothy Salzman. She has been a University of Washington GO-MAP Presidential Scholar, Mu Phi Epsilon Scholar, Alcor Scholar and Mortar Board Scholar and served as interim teaching assistant on several occasions for the concert bands at University of Washington. She also served as conductor and executive director of the Maple Valley Youth Orchestra and as artistic director and conductor of the Chinook Winds, an ensemble actively engaged in the performance of new works for double wind quintet. She has also conducted several musical theater projects including Grease and served as assistant musical director a production of L'incoronazione di Poppea. Ms. Weitzel studied conducting at California State College, Los Angeles with Dr. Abel Ramirez where she served as teaching assistant for Concert Bands, introduction to percussion and undergraduate conducting courses. She holds a Masters in Teaching and a Bachelor's in Music education from the University of Puget Sound. She is currently researching the life of Frank Battisti and is developing interdisciplinary models for the instruction of music history and music theory. Ms. Weitzel is a veteran of the public schools having taught marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, string orchestra and jazz band both in Washington and California.
