Polymer Flammability Standards

There are standards and ratings for polymers that are used by designers in selecting materials for the motor vehicle environment.

Manufacturers are required to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for all vehicles sold in the United States. FMVSS 302 specifies that materials used in vehicle interiors have a limited burn rate.

Underwriters Laboratories rates material burn rates in tests with samples mounted horizontally and vertically (UL 94). When choosing materials, such as wiring insulation, designers can choose the rating they believe is suitable.
