Begins medical studies at the University of Vienna

Receives his doctorate of medicine; becomes acquainted with Sigmund Freud

1888
Publishes his first collection of one-act plays entitled Anatol

1890
Becomes a member of the group Jung Wien together with fellow writers such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Karl Kraus, and Hermann Bahr

1893
Opens his own practice and starts writing more seriously

1897
Publishes Reigen which is censored and banned from the stage

1900
Publishes Leutnant Gustl which will lead to his expulsion from the Austrian military in 1901

1903
Marries Olga Gussmann

1921
Public performance of Reigen turns into a scandal, Schnitzler bans further performances until after his death, divorces his wife

1923
First president of the Austrian PEN-club

1930
His daughter commits suicide

Dies of brain hemorrhage in Vienna on October 21
