Adele Sandrock

Actress

*Aug. 19, 1863 Rotterdam (Netherlands), +Aug. 30, 1937 Berlin

Prior to her stay at the Burgtheater from 1895-1898, Sandrock was an actress for the Deutsche Volkstheater from 1889-1895 and 1902-1905. Her sensitivity for classic tragical roles, as well as modern character studies of Ibsen’s and Schnitzler’s plays made her a star in Vienna’s theater culture. However her dramatic talent took over into her private life; she was known for scandals, e.g. a complicated love affair with Arthur Schnitzler, who wrote several roles for her, and her unreliability in the professional relationships. Accordingly she quit her job at the Burgtheater in 1898.
